![]() Its got info on all sides, Chaos, Death, Destruction and Order. First, you've got the AoS Wiki, it covers the Mortal Realms in some detail. ![]() The Age of Sigmar setting would be greatly enhanced by more stories like this.I hope this helps. The story was still really enjoyable and I would love to see what Nick Horth could do with a longer wordcount and an editorial mandate to be a bit more ambitious. However the flaws are relatively minor and probably tied in with the short length of the novella format. We are told, not shown, to use the cliche. We're simply told that his betrayal is shocking and that this person has been playing the long con perfectly for years if not decades. except that since we were only introduced to the traitor about two pages prior, there's not really enough time to establish the shocking nature of the betrayal. For example, at one point one of the characters is betrayed by a trusted ally in a way which, from the tone the book adopts, I imagine we're meant to see as a shocking twist which throws everything into question. Additionally I think its plot twists occur a little too fast. The second half of the book undergoes a rapid genre shift into more standard military fantasy fare, which is fair enough for a Warhammer book but in my view causes it to lose the thing that made it unique compared to the other Age of Sigmar stories. My main criticism of the story is probably that it's unable to keep the film noir tone going. (And occasional references to those Duardin and Aelves that have chosen to settle amongst humans, and their various reasons for doing so.) Also interesting is the idea of culture clash between the people of Azyr who followed the Stormcasts into the new realms Sigmar has conquered and the "reclaimed" natives of the other Realms who flocked to Sigmar's new cities as the Realmgate Wars established bastions of Order across all worlds. Excelsis is a place that could only exist in Age of Sigmar and being able to look at how humans live their lives there makes for wonderful reading. The City of Excelsis is a place which literally mines secrets prophets use the stone and storms to foretell the future, and the process is so common that readings of the future are used as currency amongst the population and an entire society is built around the exploitation of magic. What really makes this story is its setting the Mortal Realms are a place of high magic with no pretence at being "medieval" in any respect. A detective (witch hunter) and his surly henchdwarf are in pursuit, determined to uncover the truth at all costs. Five minutes later all but one of them are dead and the sole survivor is on the run from a conspiracy with eyes and daggers at seemingly every level of the city. The book begins in the manner of a noir thriller a patrol of city guards wanders down the wrong back alley at the wrong time and sees something they shouldn't. City of Secrets is a story about mortal humans (and dwarfs, and elves) in a fantasy setting that often seems to big for ordinary people. Together the pair must race against time to save Excelsis from a cataclysm that would drown the city in madness and fear.Ī wonderful look at a side of the Age of Sigmar that, as of the time of writing, hasn't really been explored in much detail. Only the Witch Hunter Hanniver Toll knows the truth of his innocence. When Corporal Armand Callis of the city guard stumbles upon a dark secret, he finds himself on the run from his former comrades, framed for a crime he did not commit. Yet not all such prophecies can be trusted. Within its winding streets and shadowy back alleys, merchants deal in raw prophecy mined from an ancient fragment of the World That Was, and even the poorest man may earn a glimpse of the future. Excelsis is the city of secrets, a grand and imposing bastion of civilisation in the savage Realm of Beasts. In the city of Excelsis, in the heart of the Realm of Beasts, Corporal Armand Callis of the city watch stumbles upon a dark secret and finds himself hunted, with just a witch hunter for companionship. Out of Print Hardcover City of Secrets: A Legends of the Age of Sigmar Novel - This novel takes an in depth look at life in a city of the Mortal Realms coupled with a rip-roaring tale of action and adventure, not to mention a most intriguing mystery, as you might expect of the City of Secrets.
